Garbage, an American rock group, was established in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. The lineup, featuring Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson and American artists Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig, has not changed since the band's formation. The members contribute collectively to songwriting and production, and have seen worldwide album sales exceed 17 million.
Their debut album, released to widespread acclaim, sold over four million copies, earning double platinum status in the UK, US, and Australia, and spawned successful singles such as "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains." Their next album, Version 2.0, came out in 1998, led the UK Albums Chart, and was nominated for two Grammys. The band also contributed to the James Bond film soundtrack with "The World Is Not Enough."
Although the third album, Beautiful Garbage, received positive reviews, it didn't replicate the success of earlier works. The band briefly split during the making of their fourth album, Bleed Like Me, but reconvened to finish it, releasing it in 2005 to peak at number four in the US. They then went on an indefinite hiatus to focus on individual projects, only breaking it to record new songs for the compilation album Absolute Garbage in 2007. The band regrouped in 2011, releasing Not Your Kind of People under their label in 2012 and Strange Little Birds in 2016. Their latest album, No Gods No Masters, was released in 2021.
